A great album by Nona Hendryx her 5th solo album with some amazing songs guest appearances & vocals! Hard to believe this album is 20 years oldbut Nona was always ahead of her time. The only album Nona did for EMI after being on Epic for her 1st albumand RCA after thatthis album is probably her most " hit " sounding album. The mix of rock funk and soul that Nona always did is added with more pop and dance elements. Her hit WHY SHOULD I CRY is a prime example of this more commercial appealas is TOO HOT TO HANDLE and DRIVE ME WILD. BIG FUN is a surprisingly empty headed lyric from Nona [ hencethe title ]but is very funky and segueways into the Prince penned BABY GO-GO. RHYTHM OF CHANGE is a great songand the most rock sounding song herewith it's guitars & relentless force that really builds to the end.

Some surprises on this album that showed Nona had a lot of influences up her sleeve. WINDS OF CHANGE is a poignant ballad with a message originally about Nelson Mandela but with timeit's message could pertain to a myriad of world events. Both Peter Gabriel and Dan Hartman contribute vocals to this amazing & touchingly aware song. Nona still sings it in her shows. And the title track FEMALE TROUBLE is just brilliant - a very melodic song with a catchy chorus & witty lyrics and rhymes. Just an amazing songwith great playing & musicianship.

Nona said in an interview at the time that this would be her last album of dance/rock/funk and she stuck to it. Sadlythis is the last album she did in that vein. In 1989she did the amazing concept album SKINDIVERand then a few years later an album with Billy Vera for the Rhythm & Blues Foundation . It would be great if she would return to releasing a CD of new music. She's needed todayand her ground-breaking work like this is clearer today than ever.
